LONDON, March 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
British adventurer Sarah Outen (29) will arrive in New York on March 12, having cycled 4,500 miles from Alaska through one of the harshest winters.
Enduring temperatures of -40C, blizzards and icy roads, as well as crossing the Rocky Mountains in the fall, Sarah said that the threat of bears as she camped solo "was a constant fear". Sarah has had some close shaves with traffic and has experienced various mechanical failures with her bike Hercules in the extreme temperatures.
Sarah says: "The North American cycling has been hugely challenging at times and also really rewarding. Weather has dictated my progress, forcing me to push hard and be patient. I loved the drama of the mountain ranges in the west and the space of the Canadian Prairies. The cold has been intriguing, exciting and intimidating - it is a good teacher. We don't have winters like this at home."
Sarah was joined by her fiancée Lucy from November to January, cycling with her for 8 weeks. Sarah adds: "It was really special to share two months of the ride with Lucy and to meet so many lovely, warm-hearted people en route. It is exciting to be approaching New York and to think that home is relatively 'just across the water'."
This monumental bike ride is only part of Sarah's unique human powered global trek "London2London: Via the World". Since 2011 Sarah has cycled, kayaked and rowed 21,000 miles from London across Europe; Asia and the North Pacific Ocean, in a continuous journey, joining each stage to the previous one as she travels.
After New York she will cycle to Cape Cod to prepare for the final leg of her expedition - rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean to the UK - some 4 months and nearly 3000 nautical miles.
It has taken 4 years to get this far and she hopes to be rowing under London's Tower Bridge to complete the expedition in September.
Sarah is fundraising for four charities - MNDA, WaterAid, CoppaFeel!, The Jubilee Sailing Trust. Current total: $50,000.
