Business Travel Airports to Avoid; Hotel Growth Outside U.S.; Event Trade Shows Continue in Americas

When business travelers are booking flights to or from airports in New York (home to five airports), Philadelphia, Miami or Atlanta, they know to brace themselves for the inevitable flight delays. Well, go ahead and add Portland (ME), Columbia (SC) and Greensboro (SC) to the list. And Chicago and San Francisco aren’t too far from the bottom, either.

Brookings Institution compiled a list of the best and worst airports within the USA’s 100 largest metro areas on an annualized basis in June 2009. Most of us have experienced some of these airports at their worst. So which ones are the best? Salt Lake City, Honolulu, San Jose (CA), Detroit and Riverside/San Bernardino (CA). This, according to a report in USA Today.

In business hotel news, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide CEO Fritz Van Paasschen sees the business travel hotel market stabilizing and an eventual rebound of the luxury travel hotel segment, according to a report in Business Travel News Online. Van Paasschen’s perspective is relevant for international business travel, as Starwood now has more than 50 percent of its properties outside the U.S., and 70 percent of it’s future growth is positioned outside of North America. Interesting, Starwood is growing from 50 hotels to 100 hotels in China.

In travel industry news, the Business Traveller Awards 2009 by Business Traveller magazine named British Airways as Best Airline, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts was named Best Business Hotel Chain Worldwide, and Singapore’s Changi Airport was named Best Airport in the World. The awards were based on votes from UK readers.

In event industry trade show news, The Motivation Show which took place last week in Chicago announced a new format for the The Motivation Show 2010 in Chicago, October 12 - 14, 2010. The first day will be all education, and day two and day three will be focused on the trade show. At the same time, Reed Travel Exhibitions announced that it will continue with its plans for the first Americas Incentive Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition in Baltimore, MD, June 21 – 23, 2011.
